Signs
We read the signs this week on Annie's Theme, got a little lost for old time's sake, and followed our intuition to find our way back. Songs about signs both real and imagined.
Return to Forever
This week, songs about eternity. Eternal love, the afterlife, second life, rebirth, reduce, reuse, recycle...and endless shrimp.
Variations on a Theme
This week, Annie welcomed clarinetist Stuart Bogie and keyboardist Buck McDaniel to the show. Stuart and Buck played the most beautiful clarinet and keyboard improvisations live in studio! They talked about dinosaurs, colors, composers, and what makes music so cool. They'll be doing an evening of improvisation with clarinet and organ at Tempo Performing Arts Center on April 23rd–a truly special and unique night of music.
What's the meaning of life, anyway?
This week, Annie was presented with the age old question by her 11 year old...what's the meaning of life? So we read some words from Socrates, Camus, Sartres, and get a little deep trying to figure out if we even can figure out if there's answer. Songs from George Harrison, The Shaggs, Minnie Riperton, Talk Talk and many more.
Migration to infinity and beyond
This week, a three part variation on the theme of migration. Annie played songs paying homage to the migrating amphibians making their way from the forests to the vernal pools; then we heard from legendary African American artists that made their way from the southern US to northern cities and heavily influenced the progression of gospel music, R&B, jazz, and blues during the Great Migration; and finally, a journey through space, in honor of the Artemis II launch this past week!
This is just a test
On this episode, we explore the idea of being put to the test, rising to the challenge, and admitting defeat. We talk about Ernest Shackleton, and hear from Pharoah Sanders, Latin Playboys, Nina Simone, A$AP Rocky, and Bedouin, to name a few. And we experienced an intense burst of snow flurries during the show, which seemed very fitting!
Anonymous
This week on Annie's Theme, we explore the concept of being anonymous. Songs about being seen or not seen, reinvention, and mystery.
Epic Stories
This week, songs that showcase epic storytelling. Tunes from Nancy Sinatra, Squeeze, Kendrick Lamar, Bobby McFerrin, Josh Ritter, and more.
Back up
On today's episode, we celebrate the true magicians behind the scenes – back up singers! Songs that feature incredible vocalists, and sweet sweet harmonies.
This theme time radio show explores how far we can stretch a motif. What is the common thread we can weave between musical designs? There will always be a theme based on the goings on of Kingston—the song choices might not always make sense at first glance! It will be a delightful romp that includes all types of music, because all types of music are the best types of music.
