An air quality health advisory for fine particulate matter will go into effect on Monday, August 4, for the Hudson Valley region due to the impact of smoke from wildfires in Canada, according to a press release from the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
The advisory will be in effect from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m.
The pollutant of concern is fine particulate matter (FPM), according to the release. These particles consist of tiny solid particles or liquid droplets in the air, with a diameter of 2.5 microns or less. These particles typically come from combustion processes, such as vehicle exhaust, power plants, and fires.
The release indicated that prolonged exposure to fine particulate matter can cause short-term health effects, including eye, nose, and throat irritation, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and difficulty breathing. Exposure to these particles can also aggravate pre-existing conditions such as asthma and heart disease.
The statement added that staying indoors can reduce exposure.
