HOW TO GIVE ADVICE - A MANIFESTO FOR EVERYONE
Rakel Stammer, 2026

Advice should be a gift to the other and the self
When asked to guide another human being as they make their way across a point of crisis. Be aware that this could be the expression of many things, it could be a responsibility, a flattery, an invitation, a vulnerability, a flirt, a play, a beginning, an end. It should be a gift given freely without expectation and only when it can truly be received

Advice should teach you about your own perceptions
When you share yourself, your ideas and experience, refined into an advice, let it be a moment for reflection and for you to wonder if this is still rings true

Advice should be precise
If you need time to distill your advice into a precise and clear idea, perhaps it has not yet become advice. Perhaps you yourself are in need of advice

Advice should leave room for ambiguity
Avoid dogmatism in all areas of life, advice included

Advice should be attuned to the perceptions of the other
When advising, be attuned to the unspoken hopes, needs and self-perceptions of the other. Avoid telling them simply what they want to hear, while staying within what they can bear to hear

Advice should be consensual
Never give advice when you have not been asked. Instead reflect on whether this advice could take the shape of a request

Advice should be surprising
Have fun with it! Challenge preconceived notions. Give advice trusting in the capacity of the other, and invite them to engage with the world through humor and possibility

Advice should be about the needs of the one asking
Don't show off, instead be nurturing. It is other after all that will be acting up the advace and living with the consequences

Bye for now, and thank you
