ONGOING EVENTS!!!

The global rise of violent extremism is one of the greatest problems facing our world today, and it affects us all – especially women, who serve as the bedrock of their families and communities and shape the lives of our future generations. Unfortunately, the peaceful religion of Islam continues to be linked to terrorism – with far-reaching consequences – threatening national unity and our shared civic life, and causing severe reputation damage to Islam, the world’s second largest religion.

At WISE (the Women’s Islamic Initiative in Spirituality & Equality), we’ve recently hit a major milestone. We published a 375-page report written in collaboration with 72 Muslim academics, scholars, imams, activists, and field specialists on issues related to American Muslim life, the differences between Islamic theology and extremist ideology, and best practices for preventing extremist recruitment and hate crimes against Muslims. WISE Up gives voice to the American Muslim community in its ongoing effort to set the record straight on Islam and Muslims, and to show that American Muslims are speaking out against all forms of hate, including terrorism and Islamophobia. Download the Congressional Briefing report here: https://files.acrobat.com/a/preview/f105638c-4de6-4412-94d5-d906635204fb

  • Townhall Dialogues
  • Learning Tools
  • Resilient Communities

    https://www.songfacts.com/facts/bob-marley-the-wailers/no-woman-no-cry
Bob Marley's "No Woman No Cry" is a deep and loving song that speaks to all people who know struggle. It is not a direct message to his wife, nor hidden messaged propoganda. It is a song to Jamaica, true.
  • John Lennon, " Woman" - 3:26
"Woman" is a song written and performed by John Lennon from his 1980 album Double Fantasy. The track was chosen by Lennon to be the second single released from the Double Fantasy album, and it was the first Lennon single issued after his death on 8 December 1980. The B-side of the single is Ono's song "Beautiful Boys". Lennon wrote "Woman" as an ode to his wife Yoko Ono, and to all women."

Lyrics - clipping.: "THE DEEP"

[Intro]
Our mothers were pregnant African women thrown overboard while crossing the Atlantic Ocean on slave ships. We were born breathing water as we did in the womb. We built our home on the sea floor, unaware of the two-legged surface dwellers until their world came to destroy ours. With cannons, they searched for oil beneath our cities. Their greed and recklessness forced our uprising. Tonight, we remember.

[Verse 1: Daveed Diggs]
Y'all remember how deep it go
Started from the bottom
Y'all remember how deep it go
'Fore y'all had to come back, deep
Y'all remember when it used to be deep. . . .

Clipping (stylized as clipping.) is an American experimental hip hop group from Los Angeles, California. The group consists of rapper Daveed Diggs and producers William Hutson and Jonathan Snipes. Diggs and Hutson met in grade school, and Hutson and Snipes were college roommates. The group began in 2009 as a remix project, with Hutson and Snipes taking a cappellas of mainstream rap artists and making power electronics and noise remixes of them to amuse themselves. Diggs joined in 2010 and began to write his own raps over their compositions. They self-released their first album, Midcity, on their website on February 5, 2013.

Though their expectations were low, and despite minimal promotion, the album was well-received, and five months later, they signed to Sub Pop. Their second album, CLPPNG, was released on June 10, 2014.

The group does not see their abrasive sound as a rejection of mainstream hip hop or reaction against it, but as part of a hip hop tradition including the likes of Dr. Dre and Public Enemy producers The Bomb Squad, who experimented with production and also used harsh, musique concrète-esque techniques in their music. Similarly, they think of themselves as a rap group rather than industrial-rap, noise-rap, or other mash-up genres.

On June 14, 2016, they released an EP entitled Wriggle (EP). They then released their second studio album, Splendor & Misery, later on September 9. A science fiction concept album, Splendor & Misery was nominated for the 2017 Hugo Awards in the category of "Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form)" on April 4, 2017. In 2017, the group released a single entitled "The Deep." The song was nominated for a Hugo Award in 2018, their second consecutive nomination in the "Best Dramatic Presentation (Short Form)" category.

Miscellaneous (and AWESOME!)

THE DEEP | Rivers Solomon (Author), Daveed Diggs (Author), William Hutson (Author), Jonathan Snipes (Author)

The water-breathing descendants of African slave women tossed overboard have built their own underwater society—and must reclaim the memories of their past to shape their future in this brilliantly imaginative novella inspired by the Hugo Award nominated song “The Deep” from Daveed Diggs’ rap group Clipping.

Yetu holds the memories for her people—water-dwelling descendants of pregnant African slave women thrown overboard by slave owners—who live idyllic lives in the deep. Their past, too traumatic to be remembered regularly, is forgotten by everyone, save one—the historian. This demanding role has been bestowed on Yetu.

Yetu remembers for everyone, and the memories, painful and wonderful, traumatic and terrible and miraculous, are destroying her. And so, she flees to the surface, escaping the memories, the expectations, and the responsibilities—and discovers a world her people left behind long ago.

Yetu will learn more than she ever expected to about her own past—and about the future of her people. If they are all to survive, they’ll need to reclaim the memories, reclaim their identity—and own who they really are.

Inspired by a song produced by the rap group Clipping for the This American Life episode “We Are In The Future,” The Deep is vividly original and uniquely affecting.

[11:58] This week, John is teaching you about the near-future dystopia in Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower. Parable of the Sower tells the story of Lauren Oya Olamina, and her life growing up in a post-climate change, semi-lawless America. It's not great. The book reads as a dystopia, as a bildungsroman, and as a sacred text. Lauren grows up in a terrible future, and a lot of the book is concerned with the religion she has created, Earthseed. There's lots to think about in this one, and John will talk you through it. https://youtu.be/6iVGuMyKFgA
