*"FRONTHAND, BACKHAND"

  • Lawrence: [near the entrance to a store, whispering to his group of friends] Man, Tyrell 'bout to come out here, right now. Watch this.
  • Tyrell: [exits the store, passing some women as he approaches the group] 'Sup, Ladies?
  • Lawrence: [still whispering] Watch this, watch this--yo, Tyrell!
  • Tyrell: Yo, whaddup, Lawrence?
  • Lawrence: Hey, man, you wanna play 'Fronthand, Backhand'?
  • Tyrell: I don't know that game.
  • Lawrence: It's easy, dog. All you gotta do is say: "front hand" or "back hand."
  • Tyrell: Aigh. Front hand--agh! [gets smacked in the face, front-handed, and everyone laughs]
  • Lawrence: Bam! I got you, sucka!
  • Tyrell: Oh, okay. Okay. I see how it is, now.
  • Lawrence: C'mon. C'mon, man, you know that sh*t was funny.
  • Tyrell: Back hand.
  • Lawrence: [stops laughing] Huh?
  • Tyrell: It's still my move, right? I choose back hand, this time.
  • Lawrence: [disbelieving chuckles] Really?
  • Tyrell: Back hand, n*gga!
  • Lawrence: Uh. . . . [back-hands Tyrell and send him reeling]
  • Other friends: Oh! [general laughter]
  • Tyrell: [touches reddened face] God DAMN!
  • Lawrence: Look, Ty, I'm sorry. But I ain't sorry, if you know what I mean. I mean, you asked for it! I mean, you literally asked for it!
  • Tyrell: FRONT HAND!
  • Lawrence: What--no! Why you wanna--
  • Tyrell: I got it--I figured it out. FRONT. HAND--no, BACK HAND. Back hand!
  • Lawrence: No, look, look, dude. Hey, if you want me to slap you across the face, I'll do it. Don't think I won't do it. But you know that I'm f*ckin' with you, right? I mean, there ain't no game called "Fronthand, Backhand."
  • Tyrell: [as if in sudden understanding] Ohhhh!
  • Lawrence: [relieved] Right. Yeah, yeah.
  • Tyrell: Oh, dog! Yeah, I get it! I get it! A'ight, a'ight, a'ight! As soon as I get good at "Fronthand, Backhand" you wanna stop playin'!
  • Lawrence: [exasperated] Play what, man? I made it up so I could slap you in the face!
  • Tyrell: I'm about to smack YOU in the FACE . . . as soon as it's my turn! BACK HAND!
  • Lawrence: There ain't no turns, n*gga, 'cause it ain't no game!
  • Tyrell: YOU ain't got no game, n*gga! BACK HAND--AGH!
  • [Lawrence smacks Tyrell so hard he flies right out of his sneakers and into a pile of trash and junk. As Tyrell gets up, staggers, and picks up his sneakers, Lawrence and their friends look uncomfortable, disbelieving, and disgusted. Tyrell comes staggering to stand before them, clutching his sneaker]
  • Tyrell: Front hand.
  • Lawrence: Look, I don't know if you're f*ckin' with me at this point, or what . . . but I don't wanna . . . smack a n*gga, no more. [Turns and walks away]
  • Tyrell: [loud, crazy laughter as Lawrence walks off, shaking his head] Where you goin', then? Okay, forfeit! Forfeit, n*gga, I win! I win "Fronthand, Backhand"!
  • [Tyrell turns to the closest of the remaining friends, who look uncertain]
  • Tyrell: Okay, me and you, n*gga. Me and you, me and you, hmm? Back hand!
  • [Friend looks doubtful, turns to the others and they all shrug. The friend hauls back and almost gets a running leap to back-hand Tyrell]
  • Tyrell: AGH! [He goes flying again, into the same pile of trash and junk. The "friends" all laugh.]--Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele, Key & Peele (S2, Ep 5)

Great Sound + Quietly "Radical" Progressive Values = RADIOHEAD

Radiohead are an English rock band formed in Abingdon-on-Thames in 1985. The band consists of Thom Yorke (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards), brothers Jonny Greenwood (lead guitar, keyboards, other instruments) and Colin Greenwood (bass), Ed O'Brien (guitar, backing vocals) and Philip Selway (drums, percussion). They have worked with producer Nigel Godrich and cover artist Stanley Donwood since 1994.

After signing to EMI in 1991, Radiohead released their debut single "Creep" in 1992. It became a worldwide hit after the release of their debut album, Pablo Honey (1993). Their popularity and critical standing rose in the United Kingdom with the release of their second album, The Bends (1995). Radiohead's third album, OK Computer (1997), brought them international fame; noted for its complex production and themes of modern alienation, it is often acclaimed as a landmark record of the 1990s and one of the best albums in popular music. The group's next albums Kid A (2000) and Amnesiac (2001), recorded simultaneously, marked a dramatic change in style, incorporating influences from experimental electronic music, 20th-century classical music, krautrock, and jazz. Kid A divided listeners but was named the best album of the decade by Rolling Stone, Pitchfork and the Times.

Radiohead's sixth album, Hail to the Thief (2003), mixed rock and electronic music with lyrics inspired by the War on Terror, and was the band's final album for EMI. Their subsequent releases have pioneered alternative release platforms such as pay-what-you-want and BitTorrent; Radiohead self-released their seventh album, In Rainbows (2007), as a download for which customers could set their own price, to critical and chart success. Their eighth album, The King of Limbs (2011), an exploration of rhythm, was developed using extensive looping and sampling. A Moon Shaped Pool (2016) prominently featured Jonny Greenwood's orchestral arrangements.

Radiohead had sold more than 30 million albums worldwide by 2011. Their work places highly in both listener polls and critics' lists of the best music of the 1990s and 2000s. In 2005, they were ranked 73rd in Rolling Stone's list of "The Greatest Artists of All Time"; Jonny Greenwood and O'Brien were both included in Rolling Stone's list of greatest guitarists, and Yorke in their list of greatest singers. In 2009, Rolling Stone readers voted Radiohead the second-best artist of the 2000s. They will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019.

Thinkers Worth Thinking About

Paul-Henri Thiry, Baron d'Holbach | (8 December 1723 – 21 January 1789), was a French-German author, philosopher, encyclopedist and prominent figure in the French Enlightenment. He was born Paul Heinrich Dietrich in Edesheim, near Landau in the Rhenish Palatinate, but lived and worked mainly in Paris, where he kept a salon. He was well known for his atheism and for his voluminous writings against religion, the most famous of them being The System of Nature (1770).

Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein | (26 April 1889 – 29 April 1951) was an Austrian-British philosopher who worked primarily in logic, the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of mind, and the philosophy of language. From 1929 to 1947, Wittgenstein taught at the University of Cambridge. During his lifetime he published just one slim book, the 75-page Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921), one article, one book review and a children's dictionary. His voluminous manuscripts were edited and published posthumously. Philosophical Investigations appeared as a book in 1953, and has since come to be recognised as one of the most important works of philosophy in the 20th century. His teacher, Bertrand Russell, described Wittgenstein as "the most perfect example I have ever known of genius as traditionally conceived; passionate, profound, intense, and dominating".

Born in Vienna into one of Europe's richest families, he inherited a fortune from his father in 1913. He initially made some donations to artists and writers, and then, in a period of severe personal depression after the First World War, he gave away his entire fortune to his brothers and sisters. Three of his brothers committed suicide, which Wittgenstein had also contemplated. He left academia several times—serving as an officer on the front line during World War I, where he was decorated a number of times for his courage; teaching in schools in remote Austrian villages where he encountered controversy for hitting children when they made mistakes in mathematics; and working as a hospital porter during World War II in London, where he told patients not to take the drugs they were prescribed while largely managing to keep secret the fact that he was one of the world's most famous philosophers. He described philosophy as "the only work that gives me real satisfaction".

His philosophy is often divided into an early period, exemplified by the Tractatus, and a later period, articulated in the Philosophical Investigations. The early Wittgenstein was concerned with the logical relationship between propositions and the world and believed that by providing an account of the logic underlying this relationship, he had solved all philosophical problems. The later Wittgenstein rejected many of the assumptions of the Tractatus, arguing that the meaning of words is best understood as their use within a given language-game.

A survey among American university and college teachers ranked the Investigations as the most important book of 20th-century philosophy, standing out as "the one crossover masterpiece in twentieth-century philosophy, appealing across diverse specializations and philosophical orientations." The Investigations also ranked 54th on a list of most influential twentieth-century works in cognitive science prepared by the University of Minnesota's Center for Cognitive Sciences. However, in the words of his friend Georg Henrik von Wright, he believed "his ideas were generally misunderstood and distorted even by those who professed to be his disciples. He doubted he would be better understood in the future. He once said he felt as though he was writing for people who would think in a different way, breathe a different air of life, from that of present-day men."

[beetle's Note: d'Holbach, Wittgenstein, and Russell are all VERY worth thinking about--and reading about. If you like world-weary geniuses, conflicted prodigies (who can be startlingly lacking in self-awareness, but still not easily dismissed), and brilliant ideas which are simply, but elegantly stated, and plainly, honestly lived . . . I urge you, read on. And listen on, because the Bertrand Russell-episode(s) draws nearer. . . .]

  1. "Compatibilism: Crash Course Philosophy #25." CrashCourse, Youtube. August 22, 2016. [8:54] As we continue explore free will, today Hank considers a middle ground between hard determinism and libertarian free will: compatibilism. This view seeks to find ways that our internally motivated actions can be understood as free in a deterministic world. We’ll also cover Frankfurt Cases and Patricia Churchland’s rejection of the free-or-not-free dichotomy and her focus on the amount of control we have over our actions. https://youtu.be/KETTtiprINU

  • ThoughtCo.com - "The 100 top love songs of all time" This song came in at #49 Sam Cooke - "You Send Me" (1957) Courtesy Keen Records Sam Cooke wrote his legendary hit "You Send Me" himself, but he gave the label credit to his brother L.C. to avoid his own publisher profiting from the song. It was part of a set of songs recorded that moved Sam Cooke from the gospel arena to mainstream pop and R&B. The beautiful love song went all the way to #1 on the pop chart.
